Roses Kings Castles is the solo project from Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek.
Back in June I had the pleasure of interviewing Adam and finding out his inspirations and what the year ahead had in store for him.
In that interview Adam spoke about ‘Apples & Engines’ and the new Roses Kings Castles album. The EP is out now and work is well on the way for the album, which is due out in October.
‘Apples & Engines’ opens with ‘Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid’, the stand out track on the EP for me. An acoustic beginning is then followed by brass and percussion to really bring the track to life.
This is the track which was previewed by Ficek when he first news on the EP. I was unsure about the preview back then, but after hearing the full version I’m more than impressed.
‘Where’s Your Life Gone’ and ‘You Alone A Mess’ are similar in style to Roses Kings Castles first album yet sound much more polished while still keeping that lo-fi edge and not sounding over produced.
‘Empty Shells’ is the final track and is a remix by Tozek. Something a bit different with more of a beat over Ficek’s lyrics, ‘Empty Shells’ actually really works and is a great track to finish the EP off with.
All in all ‘Apples & Engines’ is a great preview and teaser for the upcoming full LP. Ficek is ever growing in confidence to try different things and find his voice.
