in Review Of The Week

Here is the usual eclectic mix of links which have kept me busy over the past week.

Dananananaykroyd gave us an insight into their inspirations via some Spotify playlists

“A few months ago we were asked to compile a spotify playlist each for a site, but for some reason or another they didn’t get used, so i thought i’d share them with you guys here!

if anything it shows how varied our tastes are (only one song appears twice – can you spot.. [ahem] it?). ”

Doctor Mooney shared a cover of Howlin Wolf’s ‘Fourty Four’ by The Kills

“You’ve heard the title track, “Black Balloon” off their critically acclaimed third album, Midnight Boom. But, the highlight for the doctors and nursemaids on this EP, stethoscopes down, is their sexy take of Howlin’ Wolf’s Chess session classic “Fourty Four”. Not as haunting and in your face as the original, but Alison Mosshart’s sultry back alley growl gives Wolf and the devil a run for their money.”

The Modern Age posted Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas’ first on camera interview in three years

“From the official JulianCasablancas.com site comes a new video interview with Jules regarding his upcoming solo album, Phrazes for the Young. He gives answers to questions about solo work vs. band work, what the fourth Strokes album will be like, and his favorite bands of the moment.”

Carl Sandburg Visits Me In A Dream posted a track entitled ‘I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman’ which takes the riff from The OC theme tune ‘California’ by Phantom Planet

“You’re born in Toronto to Trinidadian Jehovah’s Witness parents; your life is bound to be interesting by chance. k-os’s life journey is certainly worth your time, but I won’t divulge it all here.

From Joyful Rebellion to Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, I’ve been a big fan of Canada’s finest hip-hop artist k-os. He was accessible, erudite, and had knack for great beats. I had good reason to come into his latest LP Yes! with great expectations, but I ultimately ended up coming away from the album with a big ‘no’.”

Ich Lüge Bullets posted news on Steve Lamacq being axed from BBC Radio 1

“He’s either dead or finally leaving Radio 1 after 16 years, I forget which one.

These are the same changes that are seeing Bobby Friction leave Radio 1, but for some reason that’s not making headlines. Strange that.

Look, this isn’t gonna be a summary of the Lamacq years of The Evening Session: for a indie fuck like me, mid 20s, Lamacq effectively dictated my discovery of “cough underground cough” music in the years I became awakened to it, say 1998 through 2001.”
