“Grizzly Bear and Victoria Legrand (of Beach House) have a new song coming out on the New Moon soundtrack that I’ve been dying to hear. Yesterday a kind commenter dropped word on YANP that they’d debuted it the night before in Chicago. So after a bit of youtubing and message-boarding, I found a clip that’s a minute and a half long. Now, I brought up my enthusiasm for Grizzly Bear to point out that some of you might not want to waste your time with a minute and a half of a new song, but those of you like me will be thrilled to know that it seems to be as fantastic as we’d hoped.”

Pitchfork have been posting their top 200 albums of the 2000′s, yesterday the top 20 were posted

“Today concludes our P2K coverage of the decade in music with… drumroll… the top 20 albums of the 2000s.”

I won’t spoil the countdown for you so head over to Pitchfork to see what their top album of the past 10 years is.

MintSouth posted the unfortunate news that Jamie T has cancelled 6 shows due to not recovering fully from laryngitis

“It’s with regret that Jamie T is to cancel the first 6 shows of his upcoming Kings & Queens tour.

The tour will now begin in Glasgow on October 9th.

The cancelled shows will be rescheduled at the earliest opportunity and original tickets will be valid. Refunds will be available from the point of purchase.”

Consequence Of Sound exclaimed that musicians have gone wild thanks to a certain lo-fi bout which took place recently

“It was quite the eventful weekend for some of our favorite artists, and not necessarily because of the music.

For one, Jared Swilley of the Black Lips and Nathan Williams of Wavves got into a fight outside a NYC venue over something one of the two, who knows which one!, wrote on the Internet, which ended up resulting in a punch in the face, some hilarious blog postings, lots of homophobic slurs, and a serious rolling of the eyes.

Spinner posted the great news that Pavement will tourin the UK in 2010

“You there, Blighty-based Pavement fans. Step away from that Trip Advisor booking form. And hold off those calls to Big Apple-based chums enquiring as to whether their sofa is free next September.

After the news of the oft-mooted, finally-confirmed Pavement reunion no doubt led to mass outbreaks of fainting in the Pitchfork editorial offices, there has been the first confirmation the reunion tour won’t just be chasing its tail in Manhattan.

According to NME, guitarist Scott ‘Spiral Stairs’ Kannberg said the band would definitely be including British shows amidst their reformation tour.

“There definitely will be [UK gigs],” Kannberg said. “We’re looking at the summer time, but I’m not sure how much touring we’ll do.”

And finally…

I’m very very very nearly finished with Indiescreet’s new design. It’s taken weeks of code tweaking but I’m nearly there.

Head here for a preview right now and let me know what you think.

Expect to see the new design in it’s entirety next week sometime!

There are also some news stories which have broken over the past week which are defiantly worth sharing.

A pretty random set of links you may agree, but what the hell, I like them.

Remember if you find anything you’d like to share head over to Indiescreet’s Tumblr page and submit anything you fancy.

I found some awesome images:

“After years of speculation, the most important American band of the Nineties is returning to the stage with the lineup of Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West reuniting for dates around the world in 2010. Please be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.”

“This video gets absolutely absurd when giant teddy bears rise from the dirt, make angry faces, and proceed to smash buildings and knock over bridges.”

“Johnny Marr: Can you explain, for those who might not know, how you started the Rough Trade shop and why you started the label?

Geoff Travis: Inspired by City Lights in San Francisco, I started the shop in order to be able to listen to music all day and to provide a community-based environment where hopefully people could discover good and interesting music that perhaps they would not find in a mainstream shop.”

As some of you may know I’m currently working on a new look for Indiescreet.

Before you start worrying, no I haven’t sold out. It’s still just little old me (Chris) running things. The whole new design has been done by me so when it’s unveiled I’d love to know what you guys think.

I decided upon a redesign because I wasn’t happy with Indiescreet’s current design. There’s nothing wrong on the outside but behind the scenes is a different story, hopefully this new design will make things much easier.

For a sneak peak of the design you can head over to Indiescreet’s brand new Tumblr page right now. You’ll also see other social media icons changing over the coming days to match the new design.

While you’re on Indiescreet’s Tumblr page make sure you check out the introduction post. It basically outlines what I’ll be doing over there and how you can help out by getting involved.

I’m going to be using Tumblr to document any great articles, videos, quirky websites and any other random links I find. At the end of the week I’ll then share a selection of these pieces right here on Indiescreet via the Review Of The Week.

Check out this weeks review.

“Thanks to the musaq station at work that constantly plays the same ten songs on loop, I can’t listen to more than three seconds of Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy” without wanting to drive a sharp object into my ears. Thanks to Jamie T, my reaction is now a lot less violent”

“Johnny Foreigner have announced a free London gig for this weekend.

The show will take place at the Borderline on Saturday 12th September, and will be filmed for a DVD to accompany their new album.

The all ages gig is limited to 150 entrants, who each get a pair of tickets, and starts at 1pm. Fans should email their name to Johnnyfreestuff@gmail.com to be in with a chance of attending.”

“We’re totally perplexed by the release dates of Empire Of The Sun in the UK, ‘Standing On The Shore’ (Kanye West approved! ZOMG!) is apparently the next single to come out here. But it could be put back for another re-release of ‘We Are The People’ or a re-re-release of ‘Walking On A Dream’. Really, who knows? But this is a fine remix from Lifelike. 8 Minutes of bliss.”

Strange Glue reviewed this years Leeds Festival

“In 2009, a reputation was in danger of being forever lost. For years, the Reading & Leeds festivals had been a bastion for eclecticism. While other sites narrowed their focus, they proudly refused.

Taking in elements of rock, metal, punk, pop, electro, avant-garde, post-rock, folk and generous helpings of indie. There used to be something for everybody. Then, as is often the case, it all went horribly wrong.

The punk bands slowly disappeared, replaced by the growing hordes fresh off the Fueled By Ramen production line. The headline-acts stopped changing and there were few, if any, surprises. No longer could you spend hours happily exploring the various stages in pursuit of your next favourite band. Chances were, if you hadn’t heard of them before, they were a floppy-haired ‘emo’ band, some with annoying screams!

With that in mind then, 2009 was a familiar breath of bleach-drenched faeces (in a good way). The emo-kids had their scene represented, the punk kids saw their heroes, and the indie kids could happily ignore that any other type of music ever existed as they sprung open their deck-chairs in front of the main stage. Everyone’s a winner!”

Pasta Primavera reviewed the new Noah & The Whale album

“Noah and the Whale brilliantly capture the spirit of that tumultuous yet inspiring time with their new album The First Days Of Spring. This is an album of love lost, pain, heartbreak, loneliness, solitude …yet whispers of hope for the future.”

Surfing On Stream shared with us the St. Etienne remix of ‘Higher Than The Stars’ by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

“U.K. dance-pop legends St. Etienne add a smooth and sexy treatment to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s latest single “Higher Then the Stars”. The mix should take you back to 1990′s-era club mixes as guitars are replaced by gentle piano and dreamy waves of synth.”

IndieBlogHeaven featured the much discussed news that Jay Z was at the latest Grizzly Bear show

Jay Z had this to say about checking out the indie hipster band,

“Grizzly Bear is an incredible band. The thing I want to say to everyone– I hope this happens because it will push rap, it will push hip-hop to go even further– what the indie rock movement is doing right now is very inspiring. It felt like us in the beginning. These concerts, they’re not on the radio, no one hears about them, and there’s 12,000 people in attendance.”

“Fuck Buttons burst back into action with the release of their blistering new album, Tarot Sport, in early October. The album will be preceded by the release of a single, “Surf Solar”, on September 14th (both on ATP Recordings) & by a full UK tour with regional dates in September & a headline London show at Heaven in Charing Cross on October 27th.”

Strange Glue gave us a great preview of this weekends Reading & Leeds Festivals

“Standing as one of the biggest Festivals in the UK today, the Reading and Leeds combo has dawned upon us once again.

Filling their bill with some of the biggest names money could buy and selling tickets through their ears is an absolute guarantee when dealing with events this big but what’s more interesting is the smaller, less immediate bands that the big-wigs at the top decide upon.”

We All Want Someone To Shout For featured a new bonus track from Arctic Monkeys

“Arctic Monkeys have given us another great b-side! This time it is the itunes bonus track; “Sketchhead”. It sounds like it could have come off of the FWN b-side sessions. Almost like the big brother to “Nettles“. Really unusual melody/time signature. Turner is rapping a bit more so than singing.”

Crossfire reviewed Them Crooked Vultures Brixton gig where they supported Arctic Monkeys

“You’ve probably heard the rumblings and rumors running riot this week as what is possibly the greatest rock ‘super-group’ of all time plots it’s time to strike in the UK.

The Vultures have already been circling across Europe and America, swooping down to play random festival and club gigs, feeding small snippets of music out online, building the excitement – leaving everyone waiting and wondering just how hard a band comprising of members of Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and Queens Of The Stoneage will rock. The obvious answer is, fucking hard.”

ZME Music shared with us a new track from Islands called ‘Vapours’

“Islands‘ third full length “Vapours” is just a few weeks away from its scheduled release date, and subsequently we’ve been treated with a little appetiser in the form of this free MP3 of the title track.”

Bits & Pieces went to see District 9

“We went to see District 9 last night. One of the most bizarre films I’ve ever seen. I’m not big on sci-fi but I must admit it was intriguing. It’s amazing how they can make something so totally unbelievable sort of believable.”

Head over to Bits & Pieces to watch the trailer.

Pretty Much Amazing is running a poll to find the best album of 2001 this week

“We’ve set out to find the 10 best albums of the decade, according to our readers as well as our own personal favorite. So this gives us a maximum of listing the 20 best albums of the 2000s. Though I haven’t ruled out the possibility that the Readers’ and PMA’s choices might be the same album. So we’ll play this by ear.”

Rumours Laid Waste shared with us a video of Wavves performing ‘Hula Hoop’

“It seems like you’re either meant to be obsessed with Wavves’ brand of lo-fi garage surf rock, or think its absolute shit. I think it’s alright. Quite like this new song, the second result of the partnership between Nathan Williams and drum-god Zach Hill (the first being “Cool Jumper”. It’s going to appear on Wavves’ as-of-yet untitled upcoming album (Wavvvves?). Anyway, its good.”

“Being ages behind everything, I just found out about it, but if the rest of Embryonic sounds like this I’m going to be more than happy with it. The breakdown is by far my favorite part… I love it!”

We All Want Someone To Shout For revealed the new Weezer album title

“Oh Weezer. They are like Peter Pan. They never will grow up eh? Let’s just hope the whole albums is as cool as ‘(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To’.

Here is the usual eclectic mix of links which have kept me busy over the past week.

Dananananaykroyd gave us an insight into their inspirations via some Spotify playlists

“A few months ago we were asked to compile a spotify playlist each for a site, but for some reason or another they didn’t get used, so i thought i’d share them with you guys here!

if anything it shows how varied our tastes are (only one song appears twice – can you spot.. [ahem] it?). ”

Doctor Mooney shared a cover of Howlin Wolf’s ‘Fourty Four’ by The Kills

“You’ve heard the title track, “Black Balloon” off their critically acclaimed third album, Midnight Boom. But, the highlight for the doctors and nursemaids on this EP, stethoscopes down, is their sexy take of Howlin’ Wolf’s Chess session classic “Fourty Four”. Not as haunting and in your face as the original, but Alison Mosshart’s sultry back alley growl gives Wolf and the devil a run for their money.”

The Modern Age posted Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas’ first on camera interview in three years

“From the official JulianCasablancas.com site comes a new video interview with Jules regarding his upcoming solo album, Phrazes for the Young. He gives answers to questions about solo work vs. band work, what the fourth Strokes album will be like, and his favorite bands of the moment.”

Carl Sandburg Visits Me In A Dream posted a track entitled ‘I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman’ which takes the riff from The OC theme tune ‘California’ by Phantom Planet

“You’re born in Toronto to Trinidadian Jehovah’s Witness parents; your life is bound to be interesting by chance. k-os’s life journey is certainly worth your time, but I won’t divulge it all here.

From Joyful Rebellion to Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, I’ve been a big fan of Canada’s finest hip-hop artist k-os. He was accessible, erudite, and had knack for great beats. I had good reason to come into his latest LP Yes! with great expectations, but I ultimately ended up coming away from the album with a big ‘no’.”

Ich Lüge Bullets posted news on Steve Lamacq being axed from BBC Radio 1

“He’s either dead or finally leaving Radio 1 after 16 years, I forget which one.

These are the same changes that are seeing Bobby Friction leave Radio 1, but for some reason that’s not making headlines. Strange that.

Look, this isn’t gonna be a summary of the Lamacq years of The Evening Session: for a indie fuck like me, mid 20s, Lamacq effectively dictated my discovery of “cough underground cough” music in the years I became awakened to it, say 1998 through 2001.”
