Radiohead

I realise this track has been around for a few days now bit I just wanted to share it with you guys here at Indiescreet.

Radiohead have released a track entitled ‘Harry Patch (In Memory Of)’ which is inspired by the last veteran to have fought in both World Wars, Harry Patch.

“I had heard a very emotional interview with (Harry Patch) a few years ago on the “Today” programme on BBC Radio Four,”

Said lead singer Thom Yorke.

“The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.”

Harry Patch’s words effected Yorke so much he penned a track for the veteran and it is now available to download with proceeds going to The Royal British Legion.

For those of you unaware The Royal British Legion is the UK’s leading Armed Forces charity providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their families.

The Royal British Legion praised the song and the band’s generous support.

“Radiohead has picked up the torch from Harry Patch to hold it high,”

Said Peter Cleminson, National Chairman of The Royal British Legion.

“His was meant to be the war to end all wars – yet the Legion is still needed today by the Afghanistan generation just as we were formed nearly 90 years ago to care for Harry Patch’s generation.”

The track may not be what you would expect from Radiohead, but is a very moving song if you take the time to listen to the lyrics.

Thom Yorke used Harry Patch’s own words as the basis of the song lyrics and with band mate Jonny Greenwood arranging the strings. The song was recorded in an abbey a few weeks before Harry Patch’s death at the age of 111 on Saturday 25 July.

Rather than posting the track as an MP3 I’ll let you find it on your own if you so wish. If you’d rather contribute to charity however head here to the Waste store to download the track now.
