Festival Guide – Benicassim 2009

The Benicassim Festival or Festival Internacional de Benicàssim (FIB) is an annual music festival which takes place near Valencia in Spain.

This years festival runs from July 16th – 19th with the option to camp from July 13th through to the 21st. The festival will feature headline acts Oasis, Kings of Leon, Franz Ferdinand and The Killers. There are also hundreds of other supporting acts playing over the four day festival.

Benicassim takes all the best parts of the traditional UK festival but takes away the worst parts, the rain, cold and mud and exchanges them for sun, sea and sand. The festival has been running since 1994 and focuses on indie rock, electronica and pop music mainly but also features short films, theatre, fashion and art. 2009 is a special year as it is the festivals 15th anniversary.

Benicassim runs on a different timeframe to most UK festivals. Each day of acts usually begins at around 5pm and finishes around 8am. This is mainly due to the heat, in the height of summer it is not recommended staying out in the sun for too long. Having acts play in the cooler times of the day (dusk ’till dawn) means the worries of dehydration, sun stroke, sunburn and other such heat related health issues are greatly reduced.
