Festival Guide – Glastonbury 09 – Part II

Welcome to part two of Indiescreet’s guide to Glastonbury Festival 09. To read the first part of the guide check out the related posts at the bottom of this page.

Glastonbury Festival 09 takes place this weekend, from Thursday June 25th – Sunday June 28th, at Worthy Farm in Somerset.

Headliners for this years festival include Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Kasabian, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, Blur, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand and The Prodigy.

In this guide I am trying to focus on parts of the festival not featured as often when talking about Glastonbury.

In the second part of the guide I will be introducing you to the various different Areas at Glastonbury and specifically the William’s Green Area.

Because Glastonbury is so huge there are a number of different Areas which break up the stages and events.

The Pyramid Stage

There are obviously the main stage areas including the Pyramid Stage, Other Stage, John Peel Stage, Jazz World Stage and Acoustic Stage. On top of this there are areas including,

Arcadia – A new area launched from the success of Trash City, Arcadia will host Strummerville and a variety of live performances and DJ sets.

The Bandstand – This area offers some of the most unique acts anywhere on the festival grounds. The Bandstand is an intimate affair giving you the chance to get up close and personal to the acts. Also look out for artist going walkabout around the festival.

Dance Village – Hosting six venues, the Dance Village’s two main stages, East and West Dance will host some of the biggest names in dance music today.

Field Of Avalon – Featuring an eclectic line-up of folk and roots influenced artists, the Field Of Avalon hosts the biggest vegetarian cafe on the site The Avalon Cafe and ye olde English pub The Avalon Inn.

The Glade – Hosting jazz, down-tempo beats and breaks, electro, techno, full-on psy-trance and progressive music, The Glade offers a wide range of music genres all enhanced by spectacular light shows and visuals.

The Green Fields – The heart and soul of Glastonbury. I can’t describe it any better than the Official Glasto Website does, “The Green Fields are about change and discovery – learning how to release your own potential, and discovering how to change the world.”

The Guardian Lounge – Located to the right of the Pyramid Stage, The Guardian Lounge will feature acts such as Little Boots, The Maccabees, Golden Silvers and The Big Pink.

Kidz Field – The Kidz Field motto is, “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood, or to enable someone else to.” Everything in the Kidz Field is free and the area is open from 9am – 7pm each day.

The Park – Features events such as The Free University Of Glastonbury, The Rabbit Hole and The Phoenix Project. The Park hosts stages such as the Stonebridge Bar, The Park Stage and BBC Introducing, which I featured in the first part of Indiescreet’s Glastonbury Guide.

Pilton Palais Cinema Tent – The Cinema Tent will feature films such as The Dark Knight, Slumdog Millionaire, Grindhouse, Watchmen, a 25th anniversary special of Spinal Tap and many more over the weekend.

Shangri-La – A weird and wacky town which features everything and anything in places such as Club Dada, The Badlands, The Hub and The Snake Pit. Heres how the Official Glastonbury Website brilliantly describes Shangri-La, “This years’ broad theme is Dyscotopia. We are creating a retro-futuristic citadel, a bladerunner inspired city of pleasures gone wrong: a mono-state of quarantined and enforced utopia.”

Theatre & Circus – As you’d expect the the Theatre & Circus Area gives a unique opportunity to observe, participate in and experience outstanding performance art at its best.

Trash City – “An apocalyptic dream-world straight from the pages of a 2000AD comic, where space pirates, bootleggers, illegal aliens and all the scum of the universe can come and party the night away.” Says the Glastonbury Website. What more do you need hear than that? Think Blade Runner mixed with the best underground acts from around the world. Trash City needs to be seen to be believed.

Is that the bloke from Scrapheap Challenge?

William’s Green – The final Area, William’s Green is the focus of this post. The area hosts the Queen’s Head Stage which is one of the most interesting and best stages for upcoming new indie acts. Bands such as The Big Pink, The Rakes, The Virgins, Official Secrets Act, Two Door Cinema Club, Major Major and many more over the weekend. See below for the full Queen’s Head Stage line up.

William’s Green also features The Snug, an acoustic venue through the day and dancefloor through the night. DJ’s and sets include The Moshi Moshi Party Set, The Voguettes and Phill Jupitus. The Snug also features Singstar Sessions every day. These sessions offer festival goers the chance to dress up and perform in themed sessions such as Queen, ABBA, guilty pleasures and Eighties themes.

Joe Banana’s Silent Disco offers you the chance to dance the night away to a number of different DJ’s without making a sound. Headphones are supplied upon entry. I’d recommend checking it out if you’ve never been to a silent disco, I found it a really eerie experience, especially when everyone is singing along to nothing!

Chai Wallahs is one of the many markets dotted around the site. The market is located close to the Queen’s Head stage and features a variety of different stalls and cafe’s.

If you are heading to Glastonbury this year then it is definitely worth checking out the William’s Green area. It offers lots of variety for festival goers and a very high standard of music by some big and upcoming acts.

If your looking for somewhere a bit more laid back, a smaller venue than some of the larger stages to see your favourite bands then the William’s Green Area will be perfect for you.

Feel free to let me know if your heading to Glasto and which areas you are planning on checking out. Which acts are you looking forward to most? And whether that is the bloke from Scrapheap Challenge? (who I think also played Kryten in Red Dwarf…?) Don’t quote me on that and correct me if I’m wrong!
