With the festival season now fully underway Indiescreet will be giving you the latest news and previews of all the big festivals happening around the world this summer.
Benicassim, which runs from July 16th – 19th, has already been covered (see the related posts for more information) and now is the turn of this weekend’s Isle Of Wight Festival.
This years Isle Of Wight Festival takes place from Friday June 12th through to Sunday June 14th and for anyone rather slow on the uptake or just generally not too bright the festival takes place on the Isle Of Wight.
Acts performing this year include The Prodigy, Pendulum, Stereophonics, Maxïmo Park, The View, The Rakes, The Maccabees, Pixies, The Pigeon Detectives, Black Lips and many many more. See the full lineup at the bottom of this post.
If you do happen to be unaware of where the Isle Of Wight is located, which is fair enough if you live anywhere other than the UK, then here is some geographical information on the island.
The Isle Of Wight is located just off the South coast of England, approx. 3-6 miles by boat. The quickest and shortest way to reach the Isle Of Wight is to take the ferry from a number of different ports such as,
Southampton to Cowes
Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier
Portsmouth Gunwharf to Fishbourne or
Lymington to Yarmouth.
Now for a quick history lesson. The Isle Of Wight festival first took place in 1968 in front of around 10,000 people and featured Jefferson Airplane, T. Rex and more.
The festival ran for another two years after this with the 1970 event being enjoyed by a staggering 600,000 people, most of whom did not have tickets to the event. The 1970 festival featured legends such as The Doors, The Who, Leonard Cohen, Supertramp, Emerson Lake and Palmer and the star of the show Jimi Hendrix.
The aftermath of 600,000 people and the nightmare of transporting them all to a small island, the fact that most people did not pay to attend and the media aftermath ensured the festival would not run again until 2002.
In 2002 the festival was revived, although recent festivals have no connection, apart from location, with the original three festivals. Since it’s revival the Isle Of Wight festival has slowly gained a larger crowds and bigger acts, this years festival is set the be the largest since the revival.
This years festival officially begins tomorrow (Friday June 12th) but for anyone camping at the event there are a handful of acts performing today (Thursday June 11th) on The Big Top stage.
The two main stages are the Main Stage and The Big Top but there are also smaller stages at the festival. The Acoustic Stage hosts smaller unsigned and local acts, The Ray-Ban Rooms will be hosting bands such as The Maccabees, Maximo Park, Esser, White Lies, Golden Silvers and many more and also feature a bar, dance floor and a green room.
Other stages/areas include the Bowtime Bar, The Hipshaker Lounge and Kashmir Cafe all featuring a wide array of musical talent.
There are some tickets still available for the festival from Viagogo. So if you like doing things on a whim and have a free weekend then this could be the perfect opportunity for you. If one day is a bit too short notice (which I guess it is for most sane people) Indiescreet will bring you the latest news and information on next years event (Isle Of Wight 2010) when it is released.
