This years Mercury Prize 2009 takes place in London on the 8th of September. The nominees for album of the year have just been announced and are as follows.

The Horrors – ‘Primary Colours’
Friendly Fires – ‘Friendly Fires’
Florence And The Machine – ‘Lungs’
Bat For Lashes – ‘Two Suns’
Led Bib – ‘Sensible Shoes’
La Roux – ‘La Roux’
Lisa Hannigan – ‘Sea Sew’
The Invisible – ‘The Invisible’
Speech Debelle – ‘Speech Therapy’
Kasabian – ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’
Sweet Billy Pilgrim – ‘Twice Born Men’
Glasvegas – ‘Glasvegas’

Notable missing acts include Doves, Jack Penate and Little Boots.

I’m tipping either Bat For Lashes or Florence And The Machine to win.

Check out Indiescreet’s Mercury Prize 2009 Spotify Playlist to hear a sample of each of the nominees. The tracklist features one track from each of the artists shortlisted, the perfect way to introduce yourself to any of the artist you are unfamiliar with.

Has it been a good year for music? Who do you think deserves to win this year? Are there any albums not in the shortlist which you believe should be?
