Spoon - 'Written In Reverse'

I wrote about Spoon and their latest track ‘The Mystery Zone’ earlier this month but failed to mention one thing which I’m confessing to you guys now.

I honestly don’t know much about Spoon. Obviously I’ve heard of them and listened to a few tracks every once in a while but other than that I’m a Spoon virgin (that’s so the wrong phrase to use!).

As far as I’m aware Spoon have never really been big here in the UK, correct me if I’m wrong there.

Anyway I heard about a new track which is set to be the first single, titled ‘Written In Reverse’ taken from the bands upcoming new album ‘Transference’ and though I’d better educate myself and take a listen.

I like the track, it’s catchy and something a bit different to what I’d usually listen to. If like me you’re new to Spoon I’d definitely say check out this track. For all you guys who are already fans which tracks and albums would you recommend to check out?

‘Written In Reverse’ is available to download now, the physical release will be on 7″ vinyl on January 5th.

‘Transference’ is out January 25th 2010 in Europe and 26th in the USA. See the links below for more details.

Hey all, Just an update to let you know I’ve been listening back though some of Spoon’s stuff.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I’m a fan of Girls Can Tell but gotta say Gimme Friction is awesome.

Cheers guys!

I would start with “Gimme Fiction”. Spoon have made many a great album, but G.F. is undoubtedly their masterpiece. I first heard their music on the soundtrack of Stranger than Fiction. I just instantly fell in love with their music from that point on. I just can’t wait for “Transference”.

For me, Kill The Moonlight is a work of melancholy genius. Bits of it might sound bare and sketch-like, but they serve to balance out the precision and tautness of the rest of it. Key track? For me, Stay Don’t Go represents all the experimentation of the band, within the confines of a brilliant pop song.
Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga are also very impressive – the former is probably less consistent; the latter is an extremely concise document of song-writing that’s probably less defeatist and pessimistic than their earlier albums.
Their cover of Don’t You Evah is an absolute gem.

I agree with Ant, Girls Can Tell is the place to start! The best and my favorite Spoon album

@Ant – Sweet, I’ll take your advice!

Start at their definitive album “Girls Can Tell” and go up from there. Phenomenal band.

@Erika – Awesome, I may have caught them at just the right time then? I’ll be sure to check out the new album when it does hit the shelves.

Speaking as a Spoon fanatic, this is definitely a must listen Spoon track. The thing I love about them is that their stuff is always good and increasingly gets better.
